The Baton Rouge restaurant scene is growing again.
While three establishments have opened for business, two are gearing up for grand openings:
The Colonel's Club
2857 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge
The vibrant Perkins Overpass dining scene is expected to get a new resident in early September with The Colonel's Club moving in — there's no exact date available yet, but the word is that the Baton Rouge icon will reopen very soon.
The space on Perkins Road has housed two previous versions with the same name—the original Colonel's Club was known as Baton Rouge's bohemian culture hot spot in the 1960s and then, in the early 1990s, it was again a music venue and restaurant.
Since then, it has been home to a refrigeration trade school, voting precinct, Chelsea's Café, and most recently, Kalurah Street Grill. Owner Jordan Piazza and team are renovating the space to include a lounge, bar and dining areas that will serve American favorites with a worldly influence.
Restaurant hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Lounge hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Hikari Ramen
7474 Corporate Blvd., Baton Rouge
Hikari Ramen is renovating a 2,350-square-foot space on Corporate Boulevard in the Courtside Crossing shopping center. Hui Yang, who is involved in the Fiery Crab restaurants in south Louisiana, is the owner.
The new restaurant is expected to open in September with craft ramen options like black tonkatsu ramen, which typically includes pork or chicken bones, black garlic and chashu (a Japanese dish of braised pork belly).
Hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Uchi Sushi
5454 Bluebonnet Blvd., Baton Rouge
For those seeking their sushi fix, look no further than Uchi Sushi, which recently opened on Bluebonnet Boulevard in the same shopping center as The Plantry, Triplet's Blue Store Chicken and Albasha Greek and Lebanese Restaurant.
Uchi Sushi has become a chain with locations in Destrehan and Metairie. Owner Johnny Hoang has been in the restaurant business for 41 years, and after studying under Japanese sushi chefs, he’s been in the sushi business for 23 years.
Some menu highlights at the restaurant include the Cowboy Roll, which is topped with chef special sauce and served on a hot plate, the Chocolate City Roll (don’t worry, it does not actually contain any chocolate — it’s eel sauce), and the Marilyn Monroe, which is a soy paper roll with steamed shrimp, crawfish, scallop, snow crab and asparagus tempura inside.
For less-adventurous diners, there’s also a hibachi dinner menu and more typical rolls like Philadelphia or spicy tuna.
The restaurant doesn't offer DoorDash or other delivery services yet, but customers can call ahead to order for pickup. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, call (225) 444-5722.
Two Hands Fresh Corn Dogs
3260 Highland Road, Baton Rouge
The national Korean corn dog chain began in California in 2019 and opened its Baton Rouge location on July 12. The company now has 71 restaurants with more opening soon.
Customers can select made-to-order corn dogs and choose their coatings and fillings. Two Hands' corn dogs are built around a wooden stick with fillings of real beef sausage, cheddar or mozzarella cheese or plant-based choices coated with a choice of sweet, savory or spicy potato or rice puffs.
Finally, it's all contained in a freshly battered outer layer of unbleached flour, rice flour and eggs. The restaurant also offers fries, slushes and boba teas.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call (225) 256-6355 or visittwohandsus.com.
